Project: Impressionism
Project: Urban Deconstruction
I believe that good photography is much more than good technique . . . it is all about being artistic and creative, finding the light, and telling a story. There is no doubt that realism and a sharp focus are important to a strong image, but these can hinder creativity. Recently, I find myself looking beyond the limits of realism, especially when it comes to urban photography and capturing the essence of the relationship of a city to its citizens. I am using image editing software to create an impressionistic effect. First, I capture reality in a strong image, and then, by using colour, shapes and minimal detail, I change the way we see urban life in the cities. I refer to this as Urban Deconstruction because the viewer must take a few moments to absorb the subject, and then to engage with the image by deconstructing what is there (moving from realism to emotion and expression). My intent is to capture surprises in the image that demonstrate artistic and creative interpretation, resulting in, what I hope, is an impressionistic and deconstructed representation of urban life.
